Where do I even begin? This book had me from the word go. Out of all the books I have ever read, I do believe this is my favorite.
It evolves from a tale of woe to a scandalous murder all while a young woman finds herself. Books can convey a wide range of emotions but this story held and beautiful illustrated the pain of love and loneliness.
I really don’t want to give much away for those reading it for the first time.
Kya Clark, AKA the Marsh Girl, lives a solitary life after her family abandons her in Barkley Cove. Set in the 1960s, the story takes a turn when the body of popular Chase Andrews is found and a the finger is immediately pointed at wilding Kya.
Removed from polite society, Kya finds her own way in the world and discovers her love of nature in the marsh. Building relationship is difficult but she creates her own family with the bait shop owner Jumpin.
Romance is not left out of the story and Kya finds herself romantically entangled with sweet Tate and later on, you guessed it, the charming Chase. Alienated and void of the true understanding of trust and compassion, you can’t help but feel your heart break for Kya.
I know there is a lot of hype around this book, especially when Reese made it one of her book club pick and suddenly the movie adaption was announced. And yes, I did jump on the bandwagon a bit but it was worth it.
I have never really cried reading a book but I did come close this this one. You can’t help but feel the loneliness and heartache through the pages.
